Kids Take Over

A Celebration of Young Voices and Artistic Curiosity

Kids Take Over was a vibrant exhibition held from April 15 to September 11, 2022, bringing together a rich tapestry of artworks from the Gallery’s collection alongside the thoughtful responses of local students aged five to eighteen. From Robert Davidson’s monumental Octopus painting to Annie Pootoogook’s intimate family portrait, the exhibition bridged established artists with fresh perspectives, showcasing how young minds engage, reflect, and create, inspired by art.

In the months leading up to the exhibition, Susan Rome, the Gallery’s Program Coordinator for Schools and Youth, visited classrooms across Greater Vancouver, guiding students to explore, interpret, and respond to artworks through writing, drawing, and movement. Two of the exhibiting artists, Evan Lee and Brendan Lee Satish Tang, joined these sessions, sharing insights and connecting directly with the students.

My role was to document this creative journey, capturing photographs of the students as they interacted, imagined, and expressed themselves. These images offer a window into the lively and joyful process behind Kids Take Over, a celebration not only of art but of young voices shaping the future of creativity.

The exhibition featured playful, interactive elements, including a dedicated play area, a touch wall, an activity booklet, and a drawing space — all designed to welcome children into the world of art. A mobile guide further enhanced the experience, encouraging exploration and discovery.

Kids Take Over was more than an exhibition; it was a testament to curiosity, connection, and the power of art to inspire all ages.
